The advantages are clear: hydrogen vehicles can refuel in mere minutes, outperforming battery EVs that require lengthy charging times. They also offer greater range stability, especially in extreme temperatures, and significantly reduce the weight burden associated with battery packs.

However, challenges remain. Hydrogen production costs and infrastructure are still in their infancy, with only about 100 refueling stations in Germany compared to over 90,000 EV charging points. Yet, as Germany continues to invest heavily in this technology, the tide may be turning. If successful, hydrogen engines could not only complement but potentially eclipse the electric vehicle market, marking a seismic shift in the future of transportation.
